Department of Biomedical Informatics at Arizona State University
The programs at the (Department of Biomedical Informatics ) (BMI) at Arizona State University emphasize applied research with a strong interdisciplinary focus. Our curricular and research synergies with other academic units such as compute science, life sciences, and biomedical engineering ensure that our students will receive an education that emphasizes breadth as well as depth in the field.
The department fosters collaborations among academic researchers, clinical practitioners and regional healthcare providers to apply new developments in informatics theory to clinical practice. Partnerships with Mayo Clinic, Barrow Neurological Institute and Banner Health, among others, infuse the program with practical research mandates and clinical relevance that reinforce BMI’s standard of excellence and leadership.
The graduate programs offered through BMI highlight the theories and methodologies of biomedical informatics while providing substantial instruction in cross-cutting areas such as data and knowledge representation, data mining and predictive modeling. Students completing the 32 semester credit hours, non-thesis Master of Science degree will be able to utilize these skills in a variety of industries and organizations which contribute to healthcare innovation. Students who enter the Doctor of Philosophy degree program will take additional coursework in one of five areas of concentration and complete a dissertation related to that emphasis. These graduates will be able to contribute to the growing body of research in healthcare and related fields that will define the industry for future generations.
BMI’s (graduate program ) consists of five informatics concentrations: bioinformatics, clinical, imaging, knowledge discovery and population health.
* Bioinformatics is the development and application of computational tools for the analysis of biomedical data, such as genomic and proteomic information, as well as the study of biological systems.
* Clinical informatics is the development and evaluation of novel information technology, computer science and knowledge management methodologies for disease prevention, treatment, and better quality and safety in patient care delivery.
* Imaging informatics is the acquisition, management, and analysis of imaging data including the structure and function of tissues and organ systems and its application to biomedical and clinical research.
* Knowledge discovery informatics is the development of cross-cutting methods in data mining and natural language processing to enable intelligent applications in all areas of biomedical informatics.
* Population health informatics is the analysis of large data sets and the utilization of cutting-edge computer science techniques in support of improvement of public health.
BMI provides real-world training from top physicians and researchers as they study emerging disciplines and conduct interdisciplinary research in the field of biomedical informatics. BMI students enjoy a small student to faculty ration which allows for frequent one on one meetings and personalized oversight of research by a dedicated faculty member. Students are also assigned a faculty program advisor who will oversee their academic progress until graduation and ensure that they receive a broad education covering all areas within biomedical informatics.
